On August 27, 1999, Tri Cong Van was indicted by the New Jersey State Grand Jury for the crimes of Possession of Usurious Loan Records and Criminal Usury. Both charges related to criminal activity that involved an Atlantic City casino patron. On April 12, 2000, Tri Cong Van pled guilty to Criminal Usury and on June 9, 2000, he was sentenced to four (4) years in State prison. In addition, Tri Cong Van has a number of additional felony convictions in both New Jersey and Virginia.
